Elaboration On Images In Zhang Yimou’s Movie

As a leading one of the fifth generation directors in China, Zhang Yimou has got a number of prizes since1980s, and become a famous director in China at present. However, many movie commentators think that Zhang’s success has met western cultural concept of appreciation on beauty on purpose and learned skills from western movies. There are a large number of audience with critical and negative attitudes to Zhang’s some movies. They believe that the plots in Zhang’s movie have uglified Chinese tradition, run counter to Chinese history and lost our Chinese own characters of movie. Therefore, it will be an important project to analyse cultural connotations and factors in formation behind typical images of these movies with a high-profile by studying Zhang’s movies.Firstly, the images are given a definition in this research. It elaborates the images how to come into being, and relationship and present situation between images and modern movie. Based on this, the thesis discusses all kinds of typical images and connotation in Zhang’s movies. Secondly, the thesis makes a full analysis of Zhang’s typical ten movies according to the following aspects:such as color, sound, clothing, stage property and scene by system analysis method. The research also analyses special mechanisms of production and deep connotation to images of Zhang’s movies from different angles, which also makes further study to Zhang’s the realm of thought and aesthetic orientation. In addition, Zhang’s personal experiences and the effects to his movies are also studied from the angles of psychology and characters. Finally, using the scientific development view, the thesis shows advantage and disadvantage in Zhang’s movies. From the above, it is easy to find out the reason why Zhang’s movies have got a big success, which is of help to the further development about movies in China.The research has following innovations. Zhang’s works are classified and analysed according to the different images in order to find out Zhang’s special affections behind images. Next, multiple images formation mechanism is proposed from the psychology and characters color perspective, and cultural connotation are analysed. The thesis provides a new research perspective for Zhang’s movies, which is helpful to the mass of film appreciation and images creation of other directors. It is also benefit to the further development of the combination between the psychology and film arts.
