Zhang Yimou’s film creation is inseparable from the novel, which is closely related to his consciousness of elite culture. The concerns of human condition and the search for traditional cultures in his early work is same with the humanistic spirit and the ultimate concern in elite culture. The adaptation of a novel is related to aesthetic transformations between different art forms. In addition to this, it also contains a profound reasons of cultural. The article is dedicated to explore the transformation of Zhang Yimou’s movie, which will tell us how he achieved the balance of elite culture and popular culture.The article has four main points:Part one is about aesthetic transitions form novel to movie and the case of Zhang Yimou’s movie adaptation. Part two based on Zhang’s early films to discuss the expression of Human desire. Part three based on the medium-term movie to discuss popular culture turned his film-making individuals. In this period, he focus more on relationships and feelings of ordinary people. Part four based on Zhang Yimou’s movie in recent years, in this period, he combines the artistic and commercial of films, so as to achieve a successful of blending together elite culture and popular culture.The article based on Zhang Yimou’s film adaptation and to explore how he handle the relationship between popular culture and elite culture in more than 20 years. The article mainly under the perspective of cultural studies, and through analysis of aesthetic transformation form novels to Zhang Yimou’s movies to understand his aesthetic orientation about films. Zhang Yimou achieved balance between elite culture and popular culture.
