Tim Burton is a distinguished Hollywood film director of markedindividuality. He is not a director with a great amount of works, but the works hepresents are all famous for its typical and unique artistic style. He is good atcreating a mysterious and bizarre atmosphere with the gloomy and dark tone asthe background in his films to illustrate the theme of bloodshed and death. Thescene in his works are always shown with a bright contrast in color, and theanimation used in the film shows the childlike innocence of this film masterwhich weakened the sensation of fear and jocosity, but strengthened the sense ofmystery and absurdity instead. The main roles in Tim Burton’s films, meanwhile,are always particular characters with the “special” perspectives to vividly presentthe human soul. It is about the love and evil; beauty and ugliness; madness andfear; infatuation and callous.Recently, an increasing study of Tim Burton’s films in the academiccommunity emerged since Tim’s typical style matured and reached its peak. Thisdissertation will explore and analyze Tim Burton’s films from the perspectives ofthe aesthetic feature and the artistic connotation to illustrate the particular beautyof dark films and Tim’s complex in the “fantastic and bizarre” fairy tales.
