Psychological separation of university students and their parents essentially means theseparation of sentiment, attitude and behavior between individuals and their parents. Thephase of studying in university is an important one for individual to be independent offamily and acquiring independence. A series of psychological adaptions are influenced bypsychological separation, which includes self-esteem, family members’ relation, depressionand anxiety. Therefore, basing on thorough research on the characteristic of the separationof university students from their parents, making out a psychological separationquestionnaire suitable to Chinese cultural context has significance to a good relation ofuniversity students and their parents, their study, prospective performance and excellentinterpersonal relation.Through an overview of literature and interviews, this paper attempts to propose anmodel on the psychological separation of university students and their parents, and furtherto make up a psychological separation questionnaire. Depending on the results of surveyusing the questionnaire, the paper then discusses the characteristic of psychologicalseparation of university students and their parents with the conclusion as follows:First, Psychological separation is basically of multi-dimensions structurally,includingseparations of emotion, attitude and behavior between individuals and their parents.Second, the psychological questionnaire proposed in this paper has a high positivereliability and validity, thus meets the standard of psychometrics. And this questionnairecan be an applicable means for surveying the separation in the context of our culture.Third, psychological separation of university students and their parents shows adisparity between the higher level of separation with their father and lower level with theirmother.Fourth, psychological separation of university students and their parents has anconsiderable disparity in gender. The male students have a high level of separation withtheir parents compared to the low level of the female’s.Fifth, disparity of psychological separation also exists among students of differentgrades. The freshmen have a higher level of psychological separation from their parentsthan other grades, while the sophomores have a lowest level of it.Sixth, colleage adaptability is not negatively associated with psychological separationof university students, while it is negatively associated with separation of emation andattitude with mother.
