Study On Relationship Between Mao Xiang And The Peach Blossom Fan

In late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, Mao Xiang, a famous adherent ofMing dynasty, not only had a significant influence within the literary circles,but also enjoyed reputation everywhere for his integrity of refusal to surrenderto Qing Dynasty. He liked making friends. Although he interacted with KongShangren, a famous dramatist, for only three times, Mao had a great influenceon Kong’s idea, especially on the creation of The Peach Blossom Fan.Therefore, this paper mainly studies the relationship between Mao Xiang andThe Peach Blossom Fan from the following aspects:The Introduction briefly describes the general contents and literary statusof The Peach Blossom Fan, as well as collection of historical materials andchange in minds when Kong Shangren created this drama, so as to introducethe topic to be studied in this paper.Chapter1analyzes the background before their interaction. Maoexperienced the change from Ming to Qing Dynasty and had large influencesin terms of his own literary thought and noble integrity, while Kong’s thoughtwas very complex, as he enjoyed great imperial favor and was deeplyinfluenced by predecessors of Ming Dynasty. Both of their thoughts areexplored to foreshadow the relationship to be studied later.Chapter2describes the only three interactions between Mao and Kong.They became friends despite difference in age and status. Although theinteraction time was not long, Mao had a great influence on Kong. Mao’s otherexperiences and some researches into The Peach Blossom Fan are also takeninto account.Chapter3studies the relationship between Mao and contents of ThePeach Blossom Fan. Although Mao did not actually appear in The PeachBlossom Fan, he did have a non-negligible influence on its characters andthoughts.Chapter4explores the value and meaning of the study on the relationshipbetween Mao and The Peach Blossom Fan. The reason why Kong was deeplyinfluenced by Mao was attributable to the profound social background andreasons. From this relationship study, we can take a view of big changes in litterateurs’ thoughts in Ming and Qing Dynasties under the influences ofsociety and policy, thoughts, culture and customs, which was of greatimportance.Conclusion: Although Mao died before The Peach Blossom Fan came out,he had a deep influence on Kong and played a significant role in creating ThePeach Blossom Fan.
