With economy globalization and China’s entering into WTO, there is anincreasing demand in interdisciplinary talents with excellent English and rich businessknowledge, which calls for the reform of traditional ways of English teaching andbusiness teaching. Therefore, a new teaching concept, content-based instruction (CBI)comes into being. Since the1980s, CBI, popular with foreign researchers, was alsofavored by Chinese educators. Although many scholars have studied this theory, thereare only a few of them who put CBI into specific teaching practice, especially inbusiness. This thesis is intended to fill the gap in this respect.Through empirical study of CBI in the Economy and Management Departmentof Shanghai Normal University Tianhua College, it is targeted to investigate theeffectiveness of CBI in Chinese business English teaching and collect and providesuggestions to make its application more effective.84students answered thequestionnaire and several teachers and school leaders were involved in the casualinterviews. CBI integrates business learning with English learning, and effectivelyimproves students’ academic competence and language proficiency. However, theeffectiveness is greatly weakened by the various problems it faces in its application.Based on the analysis of the statistics from the questionnaire and casual interviews, suggestions on solving these problems are provided.Through the detailed research and practical application of CBI in businessEnglish, we can see that CBI is a promising teaching concept and will gain moreattention from educators. It is also hoped that the thesis can contribute to the furtherresearches in this field and encourage more people to explore CBI in business Englishteaching.
