| Huihong was not only a famous monk of Rinzai Shu in the last years of theNortnern Song Dynasty, but also a famous poem monk of Zenshu’s history. The mainreason that Huihong was able to occupy a seat in the history of Zenshu was that hehad been advocating and practicing the Literal Zen.In this way,he had made a newdirection for Zenshu and made the text of Zen shining in the Song Dynasty. As a childof Zen,Huihong, who had been active in writing in all his life, openly proposed awhole set of text Zen theory and practised it,in spite of the rules of no standing textand koan, which were followed by other monks from Buddha. However,Huihong wasalso a controversial monk, for his‘unusal conduct’——‘Zen in the desire line’.Despitebeing a monk,Huihong had still been enjoying‘loving words’ã€drinkingã€secularlust, and pursing social fame and political status, which most of the Song Dynastyliterati did. And Huihong’s reason for that was‘Zen in the desire line’.Huihong’swords and deeds apperaed very strange. But if we combine Huihong’s conduct withthe particular social environment in the Song Dynasty, we will find what was just aresult affected by Buddhism (main in Zen) secularization in that time. The theory andpractice of Huihong played a role in the community, which had bonded closelybetween Zenshu and worldly society and set up a straight through bridge, acceleratingthe secularization of Buddhism. |
