Along with the development of information technology, some new guiding opinionsare put forward in the Requirements for College English Course which points out that thereform of college English teaching model should be improved toward “individual” and“autonomous”. With this aim, higher institutions of China have been probing and carryingout innovations in college English teaching these years, with fruitfully moderntechnologies to compensate for the deficiencies of traditional teaching method, inanticipation of students developing autonomous learning competence. Therefore,autonomous learning platform is taken as one of the most popular forms.However, what is the effect of autonomous learning platform? Is autonomouslearning platform effective to improve the English teaching quality and students’ Englishproficiency? What problems are there in the implementation of autonomous learningplatform, and how can these problems be solved? Language program evaluation is veryresponsible for answering such series of questions and offering educators suggestions onmaking sound decisions.Based on an integrated review of theoretical model of language program evaluationabroad, this thesis makes a summary and develops an adapted evaluation model. Under theguidance of this model, a research has been carried out to evaluate the new Englishteaching model of autonomous learning platform at Yanshan University. This researchemploys the combination of both quantitative and qualitative data gathering with themethods of questionnaire, interview, class observation and test. The data are analyzed withthe help of SPSS19.0.The result of the research shows that, the teaching model of autonomous learningplatform can improve students’ English autonomous learning competence and theirEnglish proficiency, especially in reading and listening. This teaching model is widelyreceived by both students and teachers, and is a good practice of teaching reform, whichshould be implemented further in the future. However, there are still some shortcomingsappeared in the implementation process. The thesis offers suggestions on improving thisteaching model.
