Wang Hailing Theory

In recent years, the writer Wang Hailing has published many works, forming a WangHailing Fever and great popularity in novel, movie and TV field. In her works, it includesanalysis of society by present-day people under marriage confusion, detailed description ofthe daily life of common people, colloquial style in writing, and digging out of femaletragedies. Each of her works brings about an enormous social influence. Especially as afemale novelist, because of her uncommon individual experience and careful observation, shehas unique understanding about marriage. So she tries to restore the true life in purpose ofguiding women to seek for real selves in marriage and diagnose a proper medicine for thosepuzzled women.The author classifies Wang Mailing’s works into two stages: from incomprehension tocomprehension of men in typical Chinese writing style. Wang Hailing is regarded as the best writer of Chinesemarriage, with her works displaying confusions and perplexities in the intellectuals duringsocial transformation, also slight pain in the new generation who are in step with modernsociety in the surface. Her works not only reveal love and marriage in unique perspectivefrom a female, but also make respective analysis of men and women in marriage. Shecriticizes the intellectual females on losing themselves in the family all by themselves andpressing the family’s happiness down on men like a way of investment. In her works with anatmosphere of female tragedies, she acts as a guide for them. Basically, on the basic structure of genius scholars and fairy ladies in her works, sheblends with modern element, which denotes different problems and confusions that scholarsand ladies are confronted with after their marriages. In her realistic portrait, she reveals hersorry for misfortune of traditional female on their mildness, tenderness, smoothness, andforbearance, moreover indicating them the direction of liberty and selfness. Besides showingher pessimistic attitude towards marriage, she also points out the implication of happiness,which means love and family are different, at the same time she advises females that makinga decision means to take responsibilities. Wang Mailing’s novels are of positive socialsignificance and value. She is clear that in the media age, writing must be in the step withmass culture, but she is also in the higher position to lead literature development to a positivedirection in detailed literal narration, avoiding image narration in the absence of the soul,which is of enlightening significance in female literature. This thesis focuses on WangHailing novels, films and TV series on basis of careful reading, exploring for the deepmeaning of the text and the features of narration, and even for the profound theme whichWang Hailing is adhere to, the unique artistic features and the indicative significance forcontemporary literature in order to fulfill a comprehensive research for her works to fill insome blanks in this field.This paper consists of introduction, body part and conclusion. In introduction, itdiscusses stages, state and achievements in Wang Hailing’ works in20years and summarizesthe author’s viewpoint on her writing style. The body part is divided into three chapters, andby detailed text analysis, it introduces the direction of the theme in her works, penetrating andstriping of the consciousness of female tragedies, and the artistic characteristics. The firstchapter introduces the direction of the theme, namely the creative process as well as theconcerns on real life. Her works narrates perplexities in the intellectuals during socialtransformation, confusion in the new generation, and the common people’s performance indaily life and marriage, revealing the conflicts between the tradition and modern age, men andwomen. The second chapter describes Wang Mailing’s consciousness of female tragedy. Herbrief marriage brought her a deep regret and feeling of helplessness in marriage, which guidesher works under the shadow of female tragedy. However she is not obsessed with narrating the tragedy, but she with the humanistic care encourages females to rebuild themselves anddecode happiness. The fourth chapter illustrates cultural significance inher works, her market-oriented writing, refined literary narration, and her introspection andcriticism, and even her enlightenment in female literary. The conclusion part summarizesWang Mailing’s position in literature and her creative achievement. In short, Wang Hailinghas not been lost in the age of mass media, and she becomes obsessed with the further studyon living conditions of present people, different and collaborative roles of men and women inmarriage.
