Lv Benzhong’s Theory Of "Huofa""Wuru"

The poetic theory of ‘Huofa’ and ‘Wuru’ presented by Lv Benzhong was animportant turning point in the development of China’s ancient theory of poetry, whichmade the poetry of Northern Song dynasty into the health growing up under the lead ofSchool of Jiangxi poetry and reached another poetry development peak in the history.’Huofa’ and ‘Wuru’ poetics respected the testimonies, but also paid attention to theskilled use of the testimonies on the basis of transcendence and innovation; asked forhard working and tireless, but also thinking on the basis of diligence. Therefore, thispoetics is applicable not only in poetry, but in other fields has a guiding role, not onlyapplicable to the specific period of the Song Dynasty poetry, but also set the example toour learning and innovative community.This thesis is divided into four parts:To study Lv’s poetry, we should start with the characters’ background andideological causes, therefore, the first part mainly covers introduction of Lv in person,background, and the main causes of his poetic theory. Causes of Lv’s poetic is the focusof this chapter, and this is investigated mainly from popularity of Neo Zen, theprominent situation of early Song Dynasty poetry, learned home theory three in the Songdynasty. Then the conclusion was reached: the formation of Lv’s poetic theory is notaccidental, but inevitable, which based in the summary of previous experience.The second part extends to the interpretation of Lv’s major poetic theory-the‘Huofa’. This chapter is divided into three parts: Part I introduces the origins of the‘Huofa’; the second part is the interpretation of the theory of ‘Huofa’. The first sectionfirst explains the definition of ‘Huofa’; the second section mainly focused on how toachieve the standard of fluent and beautiful poems; in order to make the poetry to reachthe fluent and beautiful realm, four efforts should be paid attention to: living words,grand momentum, grand imagination and cautionary speech. Lu also considered thegreat importance of the poetry on social function, therefore, the third section talks aboutsocial function of poetry;The third part focuses on specific interpretation of the ‘Wuru’ theory.‘Wu’ is a word derived form religion, unlike ‘Epiphany’, and ‘Down’ is more similar, and then sums uphow to master ‘Wuru’---reading, diligent thinking and testing.The forth part of the thesis mainly studies the impact of this ‘Huofa’’ and ‘Wuru’ onpoetry and its modern significance. Impact:‘Huofa’ and ‘Wuru’ had greatest impact onthe Southern Song Dynasty poetry, especially on the poetry of Yang Wanli. Yang Wanlifurther developed the theory of ‘Huofa’ and invented ‘Chengzhai body’; the modernsignificance: Lu asked focused learning, hard working, carefulness, and to pay attentionto inherit and surpass in poetry, which set the example to our impetuous but innovativesociety. Lv’s poetic theory---‘Huofa’ and ‘Wuru’ will not disappear as time goes by, tothe contrary, it will attract more and more attention. Therefore, the investigation of poetictheory---‘Huofa’ and ‘Wuru’ poetic undoubtedly has an important significance.
