In the modern Chinese vocabulary, there are some especial words and expressions, which are formed according to people’s subjective view or assessment, the Core morpheme of these words and expressions has semantic characteristic of[+thing]or[+part of the people],but the whole meaning of these words actually refer to some kind of person. For example:stumbling block, paper tiger, white-collar, scapegoat, mouthpiece etc. This kind of noun is called Cognitive nouns referred to people, Which occupies an important position in the modern Chinese vocabulary, and is widely used in social life, This kind of words and expressions has an important research value.This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the present status of the research, the significance of the selected topic, the research methods and the object of the study. The second chapter is the definition and classification of the Cognitive nouns referred to people, which made a detailed instruction to the definition, and made the systematic classification from two perspectives. The third and fourth chapter is the main part of the article, That’s the Cognitive analysis and the Semantic and functional analysis of the Cognitive nouns referred to people, Summarized the formation mechanism, pointing out Metaphor and Metonymy are the mainly two thinking modes in the formation of the Cognitive nouns referred to people; Expounding the characteristics mainly from three aspects:the semantic, function and characteristics, Pointing out that the obtain of the Metaphor meaning of cognitive nouns referred to person possesses the characteristics of temporary, vagueness and systemic. The fifth chapter analysed the application value of the Cognitive nouns referred to people. Finally is a summary of this article, narrating the research significance and deficiency of this article.The connotation of this kind of word is rich, expressing emotions and can be applied in two-ways in the communication and application. Through the analysis of the Cognitive nouns referred to people according to Modern Chinese Dictionary, The paper pointed out that some words have generated new meanings,which provided reference opinions for related dictionary compilation, also provided new direction and perspective for the study of the new words.
