A Comparative Study Of Hua Mulan And Mulan In The Field Of Narratology

The folk from northern dynasty the Ballad of Mulan is well-known, it told a story abouta girl called Mulan, who disguised as a man for her father’s military service, she champaignedin the battlefield for more than ten years, and in the end she gave up high position andhandsome salary but went back to her hometown. Lots of director like this story because of itsvariability and dramatic conflicts, it also filmed by Disney in America and became the firstcartoon about Mulan in the western film history.The film presents of the story Mulan mostly reflected in TV series, form1927-the firstTV serie about Mulan which directed by Li Ping qian-to1998, there are ten TV series aboutMulan. While in the field of movies, there are only Disney cartoon Mulan I in1998, Mulan IIin2004and the film Mulan directed by Ma Chu cheng in2009. Although the above films areadapted by the same story, there are many differences among them. This paper chooses MulanI in1998and Mulan directed by Ma Chu cheng in2009as models for the reasons of three:firsly, these two examles are movies who are shorter than TV series, so they are easier toanalyse. Secondly, this two movies are close from nowadays so it’s more convenient to findout the latest evolution about the story of Mulan. Thirdly, these two movies are filmed byChina and America, so we can discover the different ways to present the same story in Chinaand America and and try to find out the similarities and differences between the film culturefrom Chinese and western films.This paper consists three parts, the first part introduces the significance of this topic anddefines the main concepts. The second part is body of this paper which takes text analysis asresearch method, it compares the film Hua Mulan and Mulan in the field of narratology,explores the differences and similarities of these two films from theme, structure, character,space-time and viewpoint, then we can get the third part: the difference and similarity ofChinese and American films in the aspect of narration, then propose some suggestion forChinese film.
