The book Chu Ci Ting Zhi is an influential work on the researches of Elegiesof the South in the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty. Its unique styleof interpretation was formed by complex influences of social unrest, author’spainful encounters, prevailing customs of encouraging personality, anddominated literary evaluation and annotation. In this book, the unprecedentedannotation was created by drawing on some characteristics of literary evaluationand annotation; Qu Yuan’s personality was expressed and highlighted boldlybeyond his “placid and honest” image; the unique literary vision and poeticfeeling of the author, Huang wenhuan, as well as his innovative spirit, were fullydemonstrated by its researches on artistic characteristics and images of Elegiesof the South. In a word, Chu Ci Ting Zhi, emphasized the analysis of ideology and textstructure of Elegies of the South from the perspective of literature, rather than its textualcriticism and exegesis, is one distinctive research work on Elegies of the South.However, the acceptance and research of this book for later generations were affected tosome extent because of not very high evaluations from compilers of A Complete Libraryof Four Branches of Books. In this paper, the author will reveal its academic charactersand literary values by careful interpretation and in-depth analysis. The thesis will dedivided into four chapters:Chapter One:The author will introduce Chu Ci Ting Zhi and its characteristics ofannotation by mainly analyzing previous literary criticism taken by this book.Chapter Two:The introduction of personalized style of interpretation in Chu CiTing Zhi, mainly reflected in two aspects, one is for highlighting Qu Yuan’s“personality”, the other is for expressing author’s cynicism.Chapter Three:The introduction of analysis and reconstruction of Elegies of theSouth recorded in the book of Chu Ci Ting Zhi, mainly including the features of textstructure, language skills, style, and poetic contexts of interpretation about Elegies ofthe South written in this book.Chapter Four:The author will introduce the similarities between the imagery inElegies of the South and modern “symbolic” theory.The part of conclusion will summarize the book’s major contributions, influencesof that period and its deficiencies.
