| Chapter title is one of the characteristics of traditional Chinesenovels.“A Dream of Red Mansions†as one of the four great classicalmasterpieces in Chinese literature, the approach adopted in chapter titles’writing is far beyond any Chinese classical novels in terms of aestheticsense and it shows high aesthetic value in its sound, form and meaning.Currently, there are many translated versions of “A Dream of RedMansionsâ€. There are mainly three Russian translated versions, two of thefully translated editions were translated by Panagiotis Shock in1958and1995, and the poems in the1958’s edition were translated by Mengs Coveand poems in1995’s edition were by Diego Lu Biefu. There is a bigdifference in the two versions back to the translation, the translator in thetranslation process using a different translation approach to take differenttranslation strategies, which produces a different aesthetic effect. This research using historical comparison, dynamics and translationaesthetics to have a comparison study on the first80chapter titles of1958and1995’s editions of “The Dream of Red Mansionsâ€. This thesis firstlyintroduces the research history in Russia, mainly the background, characteristics and social functions of these two editions; The second partbriefly shows the aesthetic value of the chapter titles of the originalChinese edition of “The Dream of Red Mansionsâ€; The third part compares the two Russian translated versions mainly from phonetics, grammar, semantics, vocabulary, rhetoric, cultural implication and socialfunctions. The fourth part closely related to the third part, making ananalysis on the reasons of these differences, mainly in terms of themainstreams, the era nature and sociality of aesthetics. The fifth part isthe conclusion of the whole part. Through the study of two versions, compared with1958years of translation, language of the1995’s versionis more vivid and smooth and it pays more attention to the cohesion andfluency of the whole text. In addition, the moral of the titles is more clearand concise. In order to ensure the readability of the translation, thetranslator has removed many of the footnotes in the1958’s edition whichincreases readers’ interest, and to expand the readers’ reading space. As a scholar within the framework of a particular era of culture,Panagiotis Shock’s initial translation of "A Dream of Red Mansions" wasdriven by the social consciousness and individual cultural factors. Hismain purpose is to enable the readers of the translated text to understandthe exotics and foreign languages, to accept different language cultures. As a result, the translation choices must be naturally on this purpose andtranslation strategies will be foreignization. Also, in the translation, thetranslator largely adopted literal translation and seldom took into accountthe cultural needs of different languages, resulting in many stiffexpressions and even led to misunderstanding of the reader in some sections. What’s worse, the clause conjunction of chapter titles’ is toolong which has also become one of the main reasons why the translatorretranslated the works35years later. It also left a wide space for the twoversions of the comparative study, so as to pursue the historicalbackground and time factor in the process of translation and make clearthe characteristics and aesthetic value of a text, in order to effectivelyavoid the limitations may arise when the total static inspection. |
