Comparison Of Character Between Nine Cloud Dream And A Dream In Red Mansions

Man-jung Kim's Nine Cloud Dream and Cao Xueqin's a Dream in Red Mansions are both masterpiece of classical literature in their own country. These two novels create a series of typical characters. By comparing the similarities and dissimilarities of characters in the novels and finding the cause of similarities and dissimilarities, we can have a clear understanding of these two novels, thus we can have a better knowledge of culture exchange between China and Korea, which may have some value in searching the Common Poetics and development trend of human culture.There are four parts in this thesis. The first part of this thesis is to introduce its purpose, significance and research status. The second part is to introduce authors'life career and technique of creation of the two novels. Man-jung Kim and Cao Xueqiin have similar life experiences. They were born in aristocratic families; both of them were well educated as they were reared in traditional culture. And both of them showed their outstanding flair in literature when they were young. Their lives were hard, full of ups and.downs. Man-jung Kim was banished twice during his official career and died in place of exile. Cao Xueqin experienced the fall of his family, he was down and out in his old age. Life experiences of the authors foreshadow the ending of the novel-all are just dream. The third part is to compare images in the novels. First of all, both novels created a series of spectacular feminine images. About creation of the heroes, both of Shaoyou and Baoyu were romantic, and they both converted to Buddhism when they didn't cherish vanities of the world any more. The last part is to analyze the reason of similarities and dissimilarities of characters in the novels. Man-jung Kim worshiped Chinese culture, and his work was influenced by Chinese culture. A Dream in Red Mansions is excellent crystalli zation of Chinese culture. So it can be said that these two novels have same root. There are some differences between Nine Cloud Dream and a Dream in Red Mansions because of di fferent historical setting, authors'thought, and different nationality.From discussion above, we can get the conclusion that culture in different countries and different nations have interconnectedness and differences. Both of Nine Cloud Dream and a Dream in Red Mansions were regarded as the highest achievement of novel creation in ancient Korea and China respectively, which have far-reaching influence on after ages. However, there is little research of comparison between these two novels. This thesis is to attach importance to this kind of research, which is meaningful to the development of literature.
