Stendhal, one of writers much traveling and describing Italy in the19th century, is a relatively unique one. He is not productive, but writing Italian work is the most, especially Italy of the16th century. In his mind, Italy of the16th century just reflects the real Italy-economic prosperity, republican system and rebellious spirit; In his works, the16th century Italian is a "passionate century", which mainly through the Italian characters no matter who are women, robbers or revolutionaries in16th century, to reflect the reality full of passionate pursuing for freedom and love; the natural scenes in Italy of16th century, appears a kind of peace and quiet.The shape of Italian image derived from Stendhal’s Italian complex:he loved mother is Milano, Italy; he has repeatedly gone to Italy in search of honor, love and freedom. Because of this Italian complex, Stendhal’s Italian image, especially in the16th century, is essentially utopia description.In fact, by praise for the "past"(16centuries) and remote (Italy), Stendhal expressed his poetics pursuit:not only Criticizing French reality of the19th century, but also showing his romantic characteristics. Therefore, based on excavating and analyzing the Italian image in the16th century, it naturally includes that, Stendhal not only a critical realist writer, but also a passionate romantic one.
