Fashion photography formed at the end of19th century as a new kind of art and kept growingtogether with ages since that time. Art appreciation photography is an important branch offashion photography. Under the influence of technology, culture and aesthetics, it exhibitsvarious characteristics over different periods. This paper, at first, studies the evolution of fashionphotography, including7stages:1. Picturesque Style from the end of1800s to1920s;2. Outdoordocumentary style during1930s;3. Practical simplicity during1940s;4. Nostalgic pictoiral styleduring1950s;5Anti-traditional styles duirng1960s;6. Sexual liberation and exotic style from1970s to1980s;7. Pluralistic style from1990s to present. Secondly, it focuses on thecharacteristics of Vogue US in different stages by comparing its representative photographersand their works. The paper divides the fashion photography in Vogue US into five stagesfeatured with different styles. The fashion photography shows picturesque style before1920swhile outdoor documentary style was predominated in1930s. In the next two decades, under theinfluence of the World War II, it first showed surrealism and practical style, and then returnedback to picturesque style after the war. Public cultures significantly affected the style of fashionphotography from1960s to1980s because of the respect to daily lives. As a result,unconventional styles were popular during that time. The characteristics of fashion photographyevolved to be more and more pluralistic starting from1990s. The author believes the differentcharacteristics of fashion photography in Vogue US shown in each stages are strongly related tosociety, politics and technology in those specific periods. Finally, the paper takes a biref look atthe development of Chinese fashion photography, pointing out the influencing factors andshortcomings of Chinese fashion photography. Both Chinese culture and advantages of fashionphotography in Vogue US should be taken into account to seek inspiration in order to build arosy future for Chinese fashion photography.
