As a core theme repeated in many literary works,“wilderness” image has been describedby many American writers in different times, and is given a different meaning. Wilderness is asubject to a minimum of human intervention or untapped geographical and ecological systems.It is a real and free nature, is original ecological nature. The people of the United States are anation to create a society in the wilderness. Compared with Europe, the vast and uncultivatedland, the immense wilderness of North America is considered to be a genuine United Statesfeature.The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a masterpiece of the famous American writerMark Twain (1835—1910). Since its inception in1884, this novel has been highly concernedby many domestic and foreign experts and scholars. But it is rare to study the works on the“wilderness” image from an ecological critical perspective. Therefore, this thesis will focuson exploring the “wilderness” image in this typical American novel The Adventures ofHuckleberry Finn. By using of the ecocriticism re-interpret The Adventures of HuckleberryFinn from the three dimensions of natural wilderness, spiritual wilderness and ecologicalwilderness.The thesis is divided into five parts. In introduction, it is about the whole life of MarkTwain and his works. It briefly introduces the research on The Adventures of HuckleberryFinn at home and abroad. Chapter One describes the picture of wilderness in the AmericanWest, namely wilderness in the geographical sense. The second chapter explores thewilderness in the human spirit, mainly in the representation of Huck’s blind pursuit offreedom at the beginning, his confusion and later conflicts from the threat of the civilizedworld. The third chapter, in light of on the ecological significance of wilderness, emphasizesthe possible harmony between human and nature displayed and indicated in the novel. Finally,the conclusion makes the comprehensive elaboration of the meaning of “wilderness” in thenovel of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
