The Study On Huang Sheng’s Poetry

Huang Sheng is a famous scholar and a poet in late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, who produces a great many works in his lifetime. Among them, Zigu and Yifu are the two academic works in Qing Dynasty, which contribute the development of primary school with the function of connecting the past and the future. For this reason, Huang Sheng has also been known as one of the pioneering founders of primary school of Qing Dynasty. While his poetry Yi mn tang poem work is forbidden and destroyed during the Qianlong period, so its circulation is very rare, resulting in less attention to his poems from people, and the holistic research of the poetry is still in the blank. This article elaborates his poetry creation from the following aspects:I. The research review of Huang Sheng poetics (preface). It summarizes nearly twenty years Huang Sheng poetic research as a whole overview, and these papers analyze the Shi zhu,Review of Zaijiuyuan Notes on Poetry and Comments of DuFu’s poems,focusing on the research of the features of Huang’s poetic thoughts and poetic criticism and other aspects of research as well. However, the holistic and systematic research of Huang Sheng poetic creation has never been carried out.II. Huang Sheng’s life, works and poetic thought (the first chapter). Huang Sheng’s life, works, and poetic thought are discussed each individual. It introduces the Huang Sheng’s life and his writings in brief, but focuses on Huang Sheng’s poetics thoughts. Huang Sheng has his personal unique insights on poetry and disposition, nature and skill, ancient learning and innovation, metaphor and implication, etc. He thinks:poetry is the reflection of men’s characters, and characters determine the level of poetry; poetry embodies the poet temperament, so he insists poetry creation must have real feelings; the highest state of poetry is ordinary and natural, and in order to achieve natural state the skills must be applied; poetry creation has to be with " subtle comparison " and gentle implication.III. Huang Sheng poetry creation background and main contents (the second chapter). The background is discussed mainly from the three aspects of Huang poetry creation era background, regional and academic background. The main contents of his poetry are classified into the political poems, thorn landscape travel poems, travel presenting poems, pastoral poems and other poems. His political poems truly record the social life of that time, exposing the rulers’tyranny and greed, and expressing homeland remembering and the outrage to the wars leading to people the destitution. Landscape travel poems more praise and extol the motherland mountains and rivers, besides remembering of the homeland and the sigh of the rise and fall of the motherland. His travel presenting poems mostly express remembering, praise and farewell of friends. These poems are Huang Sheng’s ideological record. Through the study of Huang poetry, we can better understand his inner feelings.IV, Huang Sheng’s poetry features (the third chapter). It is mainly discussed from the four aspects of Huang poetry emotion expression, artistic style, lyrical style and language features. Huang Sheng’s poetry mainly expresses the disposition with sincere and rich emotions; the styles of poetry are diverse, but mainly in the depressed; the lyrical method is implicit and gentle, with the use of metaphor or with the aid of other things indirectly; it is not only concise on word but also has more vivid and richer connotation by metonymy, personification and many other methods.Finally, in the "conclusion" part, this article briefly analyzes the research value of Yi mu tang poem work. Huang Sheng’s poetry creation is not only the poetry thought practice, but also enriches his poetic thoughts; and his poetry has the direct relation with the turn of the Ming and Qing Dynasty era background, so, the study of Huang poetry not only helps us to accurately understand his poem thought, but also helps us thoroughly to grasp the overall poetry style of the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty.
