This article, which is mainly from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, and basedon the cognitive view of metaphor, researches the similarities and differences onmetaphorical words between Chinese and English, and explore the reasons which causethese phenomenon. At the same time, through this contrastive study, the result of the studywill be directly applied to the vocabulary teaching of TCFL, which is to better theproblems in the vocabulary teaching of TCFL and put forward more effective teachingmethods.The first chapter of this paper is a brief introduction of this thesis. In this part, wediscuss the research purpose, research methods and literature review of this study at homeand abroad. The second chapter of this paper set up the theory framework of metaphor. Inthis framework the philosophical foundation of metaphor, definition, operation mechanismand classification will be presented in detail. The third chapter is the contrastive study ofmetaphorical word between Chinese and English. In this part we select the entitymetaphor of Chinese TOU、SHOU and English HEAD and spatial metaphor ofChinese GAO/DI and English HIGH/LOW as two cases to study. BothTOU(SHOU) and HEAD are basic vocabularies in Chinese and English, they have thesame cognitive mechanism, and both choose shape, location, related physiologyphenomenon and action as the target domain. GAO/DI and HIGH/LOW both choosequantity, social rank, time, state and sense as the target domain. The last chapter accordingto the similarities and differences between Chinese and English, analyze the reasons forthese phenomenon, which mainly lies in the different of living environment, customs andvalues. Moreover discuss the application of contrastive study of metaphorical wordbetween Chinese and English, and put forward the related teaching methods, principlesand procedure.
