Vocabulary acquisition is the most important part of the second language acquisition. Its effect is directly related to the quality of Chinese teaching and learning. But some problems still exist in it: Students often hard to expand their vocabulary after have grasped certain amount of primary vocabulary. Secondly, the guessing ability of students are inadequate, they learn only by the dictionary once encounter unlearned word. They always speak or write with their mother tongue thinking mode. So, students can not improve their comprehensive ability and study by themselves.These problems are related to lacking of scientific and effective vocabulary teaching methods. Therefore, it is necessary to explore a new vocabulary teaching methods.With the deep study of metaphor, cognitive linguists view metaphor is not only a means of rhetoric, but also a cognitive way for the human kind to research the world. Metaphor in essence, is the use of one object to understand and experience another object. Therefore, the concept of human language system is metaphorical in itself. Vocabulary also is metaphorical as one of important component of language. So we can apply metaphorical cognition to Chinese vocabulary teaching and learning. In this thesis,I make use of the metaphor theory and analyze the metaphorical cognition and Chinese metaphorical vocabulary. The intimate relationship between metaphor and language can facilitate the Chinese vocabulary teaching and learning.It is a benefit way to apply metaphor theory to Chinese vocabulary teaching and learning. In the process of applying, the efficiency in vocabulary acquisition can be improved and Chinese metaphorical thinking and metaphorical component can be developed as well. This could be a promising exploration.
