Robert Alexander Schumann is one of the representative musicians in theRomantic music period. He is not only a well-known composer but also a pianist andmusic critic. His works include piano music、art songs, orchestral music, chambermusic, opera, symphony, etc. These works are highly characteristic regarding theharmony, tempo, counterpoint, texture, etc. They indicate Schumann’s uniqueromanticism innovation and his progressive ideas, and make people feel his attitude toengage the music with soul. His understanding to the essence of music and hisdemand to the profoundity and musicianship of his music make his works classicaland his position indispensible in the history of western music.The academic research to Schumann and his works have been taken worldwidefor a long time and have been very productive. People have deeper understanding tothe titles and themes of works, poetry, fantasy, metaphor, and literariness of his works.Based on these research, this thesis is going to analyze"Sonata No.1for Piano in﹟f Minor"in three chapters. The first chapter is a brief introduction on Schumann andhis composing, including his personal life and composing style. The second chapteranalyze the"Sonata No.1for Piano in﹟f Minor", including its harmony,musical mode, tonality, texture, tempo, etc. The third chapter explains the performingof"Sonata No.1for Piano in﹟f Minor", mainly on the performing skills. Aftera multiple angle research, the thesis hopes to further demonstrate the features ofSchumann’s sonata, hence improve its referential value.
