Since the beginning of reform and opening up, with the vigorous developmenton politics, economics, culture and all kinds of aspects, the language has beenpushed forward. The obvious reflection is the outcome of a large number of newwords.“Old word with new meaning”, being a part of new words, internalizes newidea and concept, following the manner of new wine in old bottles by the way ofchanging or extending the old meanings, while it remains its form unchanged. Thesewords, though their forms are old, their content is actually new. They greatly enlargethe capacity of word meaning, without increasing the word number. The proportionof these words is not big, however, once they base themselves on the language, theirvitality is great. Therefore, these words should be attached importance to.With new words have becoming the research focus in the field of linguistics, theresearch on old word with new meaning has been more and more extensive and deep.To our regret, the present situation of the teaching of old word with new meaning inthe field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language is relatively lagging. In thiscontext, the author decides to make a deep analysis and discussion on old word withnew meaning and teaching Chinese as a foreign language, hoping to attract theirattention and offer help to them, which is also this paper’s study objective.The paper firstly studies the body of old word with new meaning, analyzes itsmeaning, type, producing pattern and cause on the basis of analyzing andsummarizing material. Secondly, the paper is based on“Xinhua Chinese New WordsDictionary” and“Modern Chinese Dictionary”(“New Words with New Meanings” inthe appendix of2002enlarged edition) for reference, and collects102old wordswith new meanings appearing since the nineteen nineties from the currentnewspapers, language life, Baidu and the academic papers on old word with newmeaning. As a reference, the paper does a survey on eight textbooks of teachingChinese as a foreign language, adding up the old words with new meanings in them.Through the survey, many problems do be identified, against which the paper alsoattempts to propose several targeted recommendations and strategies.The research methods of this paper are mainly data collection and surveyanalysis. The part of the study on the body of old word with new meaning isgenerally carried out by searching, collecting and summarizing materials anddocuments, while the part of analyzing the current situation of old word with newmeaning in teaching Chinese as a foreign language mainly employs the method ofsurvey analysis. Through the survey on the eight authoritative textbooks of teachingChinese as a foreign language, the selection and teaching situation of old words withnew meanings in them can be understood, the problems be found out and targetedsolutions be put forward and implemented. The innovation of this paper mainly reflected in two aspects: first is in the partof the research on the ontology of old word with new meaning, the paper proposesits own understanding on the old word with new meaning based on summarizingrespectively on the existing research findings; second is embodied in the part of oldword with new meaning for teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the researchperspective and content is more comprehensive, meticulous and clear.
