Study On Lv Zuqian’s "Lv’s Records For The Book Of Songs"

When the study on "Book of Songs" developed in the Southern Song Dynasty, with the development of skepticism trend, a new school represented by Zhu Xi,"Discussing poems without preface", was born. They boldly challenged the classics with the basis of Neo-Confucianism in Song Dynasty, opened up a new field of analyzing "Book of Songs" in the literary angle. Meanwhile, the school represented by Lv Zuqian,"Defending preface", fully affirmed the importance of preface, last the tradition of "Book of Songs" study. Lv Zuqian and Zhu Xi were friends and study mates to each other with frequent academic communications. The preface of "Lv’s records for the Book of Songs" was written by Zhu Xi. Therefore, with the background of the preface, combining the different arguments on the "Book of Songs", the first volume of this paper will conclude the characteristics of "Lv’s records for the Book of Songs" into four points as follows and prove by the examples in the Lv’s works:"including all theories without any omits";"judging by own thesis with modestly decline";"can be combined and complained with gentle honest";"confusing Zhu Xi himself for citing wrong viewpoints". The second volume of this paper will focus on the deep reasons of Lv’s "defending the preface". In my opinion, the analysis on the "Book of Songs" by the scholars in the Southern Song Dynasty tended from "Doubting the preface" to "Abolishing the preface", then "deleting the poems" by Wang Bo. Lv’s "Defending the preface" meant to correct the trend. The "Two Chengs" in the Northern Song Dynasty held the argument of "analyzing the poems by preface", and the Lv’s study followed the "Two Chengs", so the "Defending the preface" by Lv Zuqian was influenced by the academic sources of "Two Chengs". During the period of the Southern Song and Jin Dynasty, the two governments fight for the orthodox ideas in the cultural level. As an upper class intellectual, Lv’s points of view must be connected with the political considerations. The characteristics of Lv’s Study had a hard trend to history, and the analysis on "Book of Songs" with the preface combined the history mostly, which had in common with the Lv’s study. At last, in the conclusion, this paper will point out that, the appraisal of "Zhu’s Preface" had already combined with the "Poetry Reading at the Lv’s Study", with the popular trend of "Anthology Biography of Book of Songs" by Zhu Xi, which promoted the concentration on the fight on "Book of Songs" study between Zhu and Lv, and the unique political sights and academic experiences of Lv, to make a great contribution on "Book of Songs" study.
