Among the great range of English textbooks applied in college English teaching, it is ofgreat pleasure for us to see many outstanding ones, which embody advanced beliefs andare of high applicability. These books, undoubtedly, have made magnificent contributionfor the revolution and development of college English teaching. Yet many others are lesssatisfying in achieving teaching objectives, especially those that are used in technologicaland vocational colleges. Thus how to improve textbooks so that they could better improvetheir language proficiency and fit better into the unique needs of vocational students hasbeen of great concern.This thesis aims to analyze the two sets of textbooks that are adopted at the same time inCangzhou Vocational and Technological College where the author did her internship,namely21stCentury Practical College English and English for Careers. Based on thecomparative study of how are the activities designed and how are they implemented in realclassroom teaching, the author attempts to touch upon the truth of how do textbooksfunction in vocational colleges. Three research questions are targeted. First, whetherteaching practice is conducted accordingly with the activities that are designed, andwhether the two books fit the requirements of college English teaching; second, what is thecurrent condition of English textbook use in vocational colleges; third, how could thisstudy help to improve English language teaching and future material development forvocational colleges. It is hoped that the study could yield some useful information foranalyzing textbooks for certain context, and that textbook activity evaluation and teachingpractice analysis could present the genre of how textbook activities function in realclassroom context in a more clear and practical way. |
