On The Improvement Of Faithfulness In Escort Interpreting Through Adjustment

With the rapid in-depth development of economic globalization, interpretationactivities of various kinds are gaining increasing popularity. The studies on escortinterpreting, which is a most frequently practiced form of interpreting, are in greatrarity because most of the current studies concentrate on conference interpreting. Thepractical value of this thesis is to offer insight and reference to the interpreters,teaching and practice as well as the researches of escort interpreting.The theoretical framework of this thesis is interpreting criteria of qualityassessment. Based on quality assessment models of interpreting and her own practicalexperience, the author of this thesis proposes the methods to improve faithfulness inescort interpreting through adjustments. The methodology of this thesis is mainly textanalysis of interpretation course books and on-site interpreting texts to scrutinizeways of effectively improving fidelity in escort interpreting.The findings of the study demonstrate that the appropriate employment ofadjustment in escort interpreting will facilitate the interpreter in conveying themessages in a more accurate and concise manner, thus achieving to be faithful to theoriginal speech.This paper consists of six chapters. Chapter One is an introduction of thesignificance and overall organization of the study. Chapter Two elaborates on thetypes and characteristics of escort interpreting. Chapter Three gives a literature reviewof the relevant theoretical and empirical studies from home and abroad on qualityassessment and some proposed quality assessment criteria. Chapter Four analyzes thethree stages of escort interpreting and the barriers to achieve faithfulness in escortinterpreting. Chapter Five proposes four strategies of adjustment which includesomission, addition, alteration and reorganization. The last chapter is a conclusion,which summarizes the major findings, points out the limitations and puts forwardsuggestions for future research.
