| As the national soul and master in modern Chinese literature, Lu Xun has been acultural tradition. Meanwhile, being an indispensable culture in modern Chineseliterature, prodigiously talented Eileen Chang has her perpetual charm. There areinnumerable publications on the above two writers. However, few publications havedone the parallel comparison between them. Starting with the writing arts of Lu Xunand Eileen Chang, the present study tries to research their novels by parallelcomparison from five different respects. By comparing the similarities andcharacteristics of their spirits and writing skills, the present thesis aims to illustratecertain rules in literature creation and formation, and finally find certain similarities ofliterary masterpiece in artistic achievements.Firstly, their life experiences, characteristics and values have a tremendousimpact on their literature creation and continually provide raw materials for theirwriting. Secondly, their different surroundings, characteristics, tempers andstandpoints have formed their extraordinary disparity in selecting materials for theirnovels. Nevertheless, their similar sufferings made them perceive the darkness ofsociety and ugliness of humans much earlier than their peers. Hence, although theydiffer in selecting materials, their spirits and insight of their works are deeply related.Thirdly, their different creating materials pose an immediate impact on theirtechniques of expression. Lu Xun’s simple and straightforward style of writing andEileen Chang’s graceful and elegant style of writing have formed a contrast. But theirdeep related spirits made them use same techniques of expressions such as sarcasm,symbolism and metaphor to disclose the evil in the rural areas or the cities and theugliness rooted in humans. By tailoring in great care, the structure of Lu Xun’s essayand Eileen Zhang’s novella has similar beauty in form.Finally, Lu Xun, anintermediator in history, and Eileen Chang, who lived in a big but ruined society,wrote in their unique charms. The language style of Lu Xun’s novel is solemn andstirring, while the language style of Eileen Chang’s novel is bleak and desolate. Theirdifferent language styles made up of their different styles of literary creation. |
