In 1932,a short story called Poor her has been published in the school journal of St.Mary’s Hall,and from 1970 s to 1990 s,when the last novel Little Reunion has finished,Eileen Chang,being in the field of creation for over half a century,has left many classics for later generations,such as The Golden Cangue,Love in a Fallen City,Red Rose and White Rose,The Spyring etc.Although different in both literature genre and content,those works however,is faintly found several signs of repeated creation.Through being chewed and dismantled in writing time and again,Eileen Chang,has approached the mystery in her heart gradually.In a manner of speaking,since 1938,when the novel what a life,what a girl’s life has been published in Shanghai Evening Post,Eileen Chang has stepped into the repetitive cycle.For example,we can see the shadow of early painful memory in her later works such as The Book of Change,The Fall of the Pagoda and Little Reunion,and without any doubt,those memories have become basic motif in her works.The repetition in Eileen Chang’s writing is comprehensive and three-dimensional.If we get to the bottom of the matter,the repetition in Eileen Chang’s works have the fallowing features:Firstly,many different kinds of literature images have spread all over in Eileen Chang’s works,and those literature images have not only been drawn together in different texts,but also shown attractively and expressively.For example,those literature images,mirror,moon and plants,emerge intense cultural tension,enable to create special atmosphere,suggest hidden clues and play an important role in observing the vicissitudes of life.Secondly,repetition in Eileen Chang’s works spans both the time and space,for example,there were a lot of visible tracks in The Book of Change,The Fall of the Pagoda and Little Reunion,which have appeared in early works,including Whispers,Children and Fools speak the truth,and From the Ashes,and so do the relationship between Eighteen Years and Half a Lifelong Romance.The Golden Cangue,being praised as “one of the most beautiful things in the literary world” by Fu Lei,has at least 5 Chinese and English editions,which is difficult in the progress.However,the heroine Ch’i-ch’iao shows herself robust and special through the writer’s repetition.Eventually,Compared to contemporary writers,Eileen Chang is more prominent in bilingual writing,and it helps to provide new propulsion for her.Eileen Chang has not only translated her English works into Chinese,such as The Golden Cangue,but also translated Chinese into English,such as Stale Mates.In a word,repetition is a vital clue in Eileen Chang’s literary creation.Besides,sorting and exploring the significance of literary history would facilitate to expand the academic space of studies on Eileen Chang to an extreme.
