On the basis of Darwin’s evolution theory, Memetics is a new theory to interpret the laws of cultural evolution. At present, research concerned is being carried out heatedly at home and abroad. In Chinese academic field, however, it is still a comparatively new theory and thus possesses an enormous research potential. Meme is a unit of intellectual or cultural information that can be transmitted in a non-genetic way, especially by way of imitation. There are many different styles of memes, such as tunes, ideas, catchwords and clothes fashions etc., one of which is language. Memetically, language memes reveal the law of speech transmission and language replication from a new angle.Spring Festival Gala (SFG) is one of the most appealing programs in CCTV, and is also a traditional spiritual feast for people on Spring Festival Eve. Every year SFG is presented with rich programs in a variety of forms. Among them, language programs (cross talk and short comedy) enjoy the most popularity with the audience because their languages are humorous, relaxing, entertaining, and have profound vitality and cultural features. This thesis attempts to combine memetic theories with the catchwords of language programs in2011SFG and analyze the phenomena of language memes from the perspective of memetics. Therefore, the features and working mechanism of language memes in SFG catchwords are thoroughly explored, after which implications on language evolution and on the further development of SFG language programs will be drawn. In essence, this is a qualitative analysis based on the data collected from the ten language programs in2011SFG.Language memes in SFG catchwords are vivid and interesting phenomena. A systematic research on it can provide both theoretical and practical meanings. The tentative research on SFG catchwords from memetic angle can not only extend the research range of memetics in the Chinese language, but also shed light on the production of successful SFG language programs.
