Sonata in c minor for violin and piano (Op.45) is one of the most famous chamber music of Edvard Grieg, the composer, conductor and pianist in the end of the19th century and the beginning of the20th century. This sonata, which uses exquisite and characteristic musical technique, shows the music style of the mature period of Grieg’s composing. In Chinese scholar world, however, there is still lack of the deep analysis and study of the work. The analysis of the sonata in this article can be seen as a supplement to the Chinese scholar world on this subject. Moreover, this study can offer instructions of the performing practice of the music, and have great practical value.There are three chapters in this article. Chapter Ⅰ is the instruction of the composer and his music style, which contains Edvard Grieg’s life and his chamber music, and the national and individual character in his music style. Chapter Ⅱ shows the unique historical environment of Sonata in c minor for violin and piano (Op.45), and focuses on the influence of the historical context on the music. Chapter Ⅲ is the analysis of the music text, including the analysis of the music structure, theme and motif, rhythm, tonality, harmony, texture, dynamic and the high-point of the music.
