A Study Of Liangzhou Poetry In The Tang Dynasty

Liangzhou was founded during governing period of Emperor Wudi of Han Dynasty. Through develpoemnt of Western&Eastern Han Dynasties and Wei, Jin and Southern&Northern Dynasties, Liangzhou had become a military center in the Hexi district, the east gate of Silk Road and been the Former Liang’s provincial capital as well as Later Liang’s, Southern Liang’s and Northern Liang’s. Liangzhou was the prosperous land on the Silk Road in Han and Tang Dynasty and became the second largest city in the northwest of our country after Chang’an. Since Tang Dynasty, emperors had paid more attention to governance for Hexi district. Therefore early in Tang Dynasty, Liangzhou was not only a governorate but also a legacy of a regional chief. After foundation of Tang Dynasty, the main cause of a majority of wars with northwest minority was Liangzhou.When Tang poets describe Liangzhou, they always show rich content, true feelings, hardship of war, patriotism, and strong homesick. Other poets pay more attention to local natural scenery and unique foreign culture which includes folk customs, dance and Buddhism. The rich content presented by Liangzhou song has been an important part of frontier culture.The styles of Liangzhou song in Tang Dynasty are miserable, vigorous, bold, peaceful and natural. Various artistic styles show poets’different feelings and also enrich emotional connotation and massive historical sense of Liangzhou song. Liangzhou poetic images which include images of non-han music such as Hujia, Tartar pipe, and pipa, are rich. Its tune is remote, gloomy, and desolate, which bring frontier soldiers strong sad feeling and lonely mood. Desolate images mainly include Sha Qi, cold moon, cold wind, flowers swung in the coldness, frost, post stage in winter, snow and cold weather. These desolate images in the poems not only present the harsh environment where the frontier soldiers stay, but also describe their inner desolate and solitude feelings. The realistic spirit of Liangzhou poetry leaves us a true and vivid ancient Liangzhou.
