Xu Dishan is a remarkable writer in the contemporary literature field with a distinct and imaginative style, his works have special subjects, legendary and romantic qualities.This kind of style has a close relationship with his cognition and experience to these religions. So far, most of the research achievements about this subject are limited to the relationship between Xu Dishan’s writing and Buddhism or Christianism, while the religious sentiments in his works also result from Taoism, Islamism, Manicheism and folk religion. This essay aims to do a comprehensive and systematic research between Xu Dishan’s literary writing and these religions.The introduction part sketches briefly Xu Dishan’s experiences related to religions, his research achievements in the field of Religious Studies, and also summarize the research status at home and abroad on this thesis. The main body is divided into4chapters. Chapter One aims to discuss the relationship between Xu Dishan’s writing and Buddhist culture, analyze the reason why Xu Dishan felt close to Buddhist based on personality, family influence, particular experience, sketch out his achievements on Buddhism. Analyze the Buddhist elements in his writing according to his works, including Bitterness, Emptiness, the combination of "departure from the material world"and "Literature for life". Discuss the correlation between Buddhist Sutras and Xu Dishan’s writing in art, from the aspect of style reference, borrowing of Buddhist images and terms and motif reference, also the transformation Xu Dishan did to the Buddhist scriptures, in the ways of reality rewriting, combination of Buddhist principles and social reformation ideas, compliments for women’s lofty characters. Chapter Two aims to discuss the relationship between Xu Dishan’s writing and Christian culture. Summarize Xu Dishan’s related experience, as he was a Christian. Analyze the Christian cultural elements embodied in his works, taking "loving others as self","Sacrifice altruism","confession and salvation" for example. Discuss the artistic influence the Bible has on Xu Dishan’s writing, in terms of narrative structure, rhetoric approaches, characterization, and also his profound consideration on Christian Doctrine. Chapter Three aims to discuss the relationship between Xu Dishan’s writing and Taoist culture. Sketch the research achievements Xu Dishan had done on Taoism, analyze the Taoist cultural ideas in his literary writing, including "taking everything as it comes","returning to nature","Animalism". Discuss the influence aestheticizing outlook on life had do on Xu Dishan’s writing, from the aspects of pursuit to the philosophy categories of beauty and joy, the interchange between human and nature. Chapter Four aims to discuss the relationship between Xu Dishan’s writing and3other religious cultures. First, analyze the relationship between his writing and Islamic culture, and some ideas of the latter expressed in Xu Dishan’s writing, such as "Suffering Consciousness". Then, discuss the relationship between his writing and Manichaean culture, including some Manichaean views embodied in his works, for example,"Light Consciousness"and binary oppositions of Good and Evil". Finally, discuss the relationship between his writing and folk religious culture, summarize the superstitious thoughts embodied in his works. The conclusion part aims to discuss Xu Dishan’s ideal concept of religion, that is, fusion of all religions, and the ideal religion should be modernized and scientific, striving for expressing its ultimate concern for life, and saving human from moral crisis.
