The Birth Of Legend

Charlemagne is the most prominent sovereign in Europe Medieval history. Under the rule of him, great contributions had been made in the fields of military politics culture and religion. Although he was accused of private life and political failures in his last few years. However as time went by, people spoke high of him. In the literature of11-13th century such as chanson of geste and religion literature, people had attribute some legend story to him. So he turned into a literary image. In this passage, I tried to restore the true image of Charlemagne in History and examine the evolution of his image. Then I concluded the literary image by explaining the texts of the works and uncover the meaning behind them. Finally I researched the reason why the legendary image of Charlemagne emerge combining the history back ground.This thesis is divided into three parts:exordium, test and epilogue:In the part of exordium, mainly included the definition of the research range, combing the current situation home and board and pointing out the innovations of this paper.In the part of test, chapter one, I tried to restore the true image of Charlemagne in History and examine the evolution of his image. Charlemagne had begun turning into a literary image. Chapter two is the main body of this paper. I summarized the literary image of Charlemagne into "crusader""ideal King" and "feudal lord". In chapter three, I researched the reason why the legendary image of Charlemagne emerge combining the history back ground. The ideology of church kingship and nobles is the true motive of emerging of Charlemagne’s image.In the epilogue, I summarized the problem, and put forward some conclusions.
