Books are an important driving force of human development. With thedevelopment of human society, people have gradually profound understanding of thebooks and the concept of books has been gradually transforming, therefore, the bookdesign concept is formed and extends multiple sensory stimulations on the basis ofsimple visual design in the past to satisfy a wide range of needs of the readers. Thefollowing various sensory modes of transmission attract more and more attention, whilevisual and tactile sensory experience have been studied and applied to the actual designof the books by scholars. However, the importance of auditory design in this process isalso gradually becoming prominent and becomes an indispensable important componentof contemporary book design.Books auditory design refers to the design approach of adding the auditory sensoryexperiences in the process of book design. When reading such books, readers not onlycan feel the visual stimulus brought by the design, layout and color as well as tactileexperience of material quality, but also get the auditory enjoyment through opening thebook or interaction. Such omnibearing sensory experiences could convey the ideas andthe connotations in the book more accurately, which could make the readers intoxicatedin the reading world thoroughly. This is precisely the important reason why thetraditional paper books can compete with e-books without being replaced. This paper takes the relevant concepts of contemporary book design for guidance, and gradually explains the status of contemporary book design, which includes the bookdesign status quo at home and abroad as well as the design features of the modern book.On this basis, this paper analyzes the new demands of the contemporary readers forbook design, from which it learns about the requirement of readers for the sensoryexperience. Sensory design plays an important position in the book design, which is alsoin line with the “five senses” theory put forward by Mr. Sugiura Kohei. Books withfocus on the visual sense and tactile sense have been accepted and widely usedgradually, while the auditory design needs the further exploration and practice by ourdesigners and scholars.Afterwards, it explores the functions and values of the auditory design of books aswell as the guidance significance to modern book design, and then concludes theinevitable development trend of auditory design of books. Then, this paper classifies the elements that affect the auditory design of books, and sums up the generation principle of the auditory experience of books from twoperspectives of the influencing factors and the sound types. Different design methodscan give readers different listening experience of book design. Finally, this paper carries on a brief discussion about the way of thinking, innovation requirements as well as problems that need attention in the auditory design process of the books and then reaches the conclusion that the auditory design of bookswill become the future development trend of the book design. What’s more, the idea ofauditory design could also be applied to more extensive design fields.
