A Study On The Translation Of Implicit Cohesion In Bian Cheng From The Perspective Of Context

Cohesion in discourse is not only the lexical or grammatical approach in the surface structure, but also a cognitive approach in the deep structure. The former refers to the explicit cohesion, including grammatical means such as reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction, and lexical means such as repetition, synonymy, co-text and collocation; the latter refers to implicit cohesion. Implicit cohesion refers to semantic relations that unite the discourse through non-linguistic factors or external linguistic conditions, which can only be inferred from the situational context or cultural context.Many Scholars at home and abroad have made a great number of researches on explicit cohesion, but few scholars do research on implicit cohesion, let alone the translation of implicit cohesion. Based on this situation, this paper exerts effort on the translation of implicit cohesion which not only extends and enriches the research of cohesion, but also provides a better guidance for translation practice.Context and the translation of implicit cohesion are closely related. The translation of implicit relies on the support of context, and the theory of situational and cultural context forms a theoretical framework for the translation of implicit cohesion; meanwhile, the translation of implicit cohesion contributes to a better understanding of context. Implicit cohesion has to be inferred from the context, thus, the successful translation of implicit cohesion is based on the comprehensive understanding of context.This paper takes the native literature-Bian Cheng as the source text, and its translated version The Border Town translated by Yang Xianyi and Glady Yang as the target text. By analyzing the implicit cohesion in the source text and its translation in target text, this paper tries to summarize the translation strategies of implicit cohesion; by random sampling the explicitation and implicitation of implicit cohesion in the novel, this paper aims at finding out the general translation tendency of implicit cohesion in the Chinese to English translation.
