Christian universities initiated Chinese higher education, which western missionaries established in China at the end of19th century and the beginning of20th century. Medicine is the earliest and the most successful subject in christian universities. Christian universities played a leading role in the development of medicine in modern China, which not only made great contribution at that time, but also exerted an profound influence on later Chinese medicine.The dissertation mainly investigated the action of Christian universities in the development of medical institutionalization in modern China. The text made a systematic survey for the action of Christian universities in the development of medical institutionalization in modern China from three aspects: christian universities and medical education in modern China, christian universities and medical exchange and study in modern China, The graduates of christian universities and medical institutionalization in modern China. Chapter1and Chapter2mainly investigated the action of christian universities themselves in the development of medical institutionalization in modern China. Chapter3mainly investigated the action of the graduates of christian universities in the development of medical institutionalization in modern China.Chapter1mainly investigated the initiative and demonstration of advanced medical education of christian universities in modern Chinese medical education. Christian universities initiated Chinese higher medical education and Chinese female higher medical education, established medical education mode in modern china and promoted the modernization of Chinese higher medical education in early period.Chapter2mainly investigated the action of medical exchange and study based on advanced medical education of christian universities in the development of medical institutionalization in modern China. Christian universities established China Medical Missionary Association which is the earliest medical association in China, Chinese Medical Missionary Journal which is the most important medical magazine in China in Late Qing and the Early Republican China, Chinese Association for Physiological Sciences which is the first association for physiological sciences in China and The Chinese Journal of Physiology with international level.Chapter3mainly investigated the action of the graduates of christian universities in the native development of medical institutiona in modern China based on demonstration and promotion of christian universities themselves in the development of medical institutionalization in modern China. The graduates of christian universities established Chinese Medical Association which is the largest medical association in modern China, National Medical Journal of China which is the most influential Chinese medical journal in modern China, Shanghai Medical College which is the first medical college of high quality by Chinese people, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences which is the only medical academic center of national level and comprehensive medical research organization in China, Ministry of Health which is a central health institution.Through analyzing and discussing on the three aspects,the dissertation discovered that christian universities played an important role in the development of medical institutionalization in modern China. In addition, through analyzing the latest research results and the past materials, the dissertation enriched the connotation of christian universities, added Canton Medical Collegel, Hsiang-Ya Medical College, Peking Union Medical College, Shanghai Women’s Medical College,Moukden Medical College and Hackett Medical College. On this basis, the dissertation investigated the action of christian universities in the development of medical institutionalization in modern China from a medical sociological perspective.
