As the crystallization of human being’s civilization, the landscape culture is theoutcome of people’s activities of exploring and reforming the natural world.Traditionally, the Chinese stick to the belief that people’s life and activities shouldbe in harmony with the nature. This deep-rooted idea of the Chinese brings forth thetraditional Chinese landscape painting. Motivated by the beauty of nature, people arewilling to integrate their feelings into the landscape painting, as well as landscapepoetry, gardens and travel journals, which jointly stimulate the emergence andevolution of the landscape culture. The Wei&Jin Dynasties and Sui&Tang Dynasties witnessed the formationand development periods of the landscape painting respectively. And the diversity ofthe landscape painting’s styles proclaimed the arrival of its mature stage. Byanalysing the abundant image materials of Tang&Song Dynasties’ landscapepaintings, the author tries to explore the role, function and significance of them inthe cultural history, as well as their common theme of "Tu Zhen"(imitating thenature as real as possible) theory and "Chang Shen"(the mental delightedness)theory. On the basis of the Chinese aesthetics theory, the thesis elaborates the meaningof image and modality in landscape paintings of Tang&Song Dynasties by means ofculturology, artistic morphology and iconology. In the first part of the thesis, byanalysing the evolution of image styles in the paintings of the Pre-Tang Dynastyperiod, Sui&Tang Dynasties, the Five Dynasties&Northern Song Dynasty, and theSouthern Song Dynasty respectively, the phylogeny of images of landscape paintingsin Tang&Song Dynasties is elucidated. The following part mainly deals with thedrawing rules of landscape paintings in Tang&Song Dynasties from theperspectives of painting materials, representation techniques, implied meaning of dark or light inks and layout of images. Finally, some great landscape paintings andpainters in Tang&Song Dynasties, which represent the most splendid achievementthe Chinese landscape painting has made, are studied closely so as to reveal theevolution process of Tang&Song Dynasties’ landscape paintings in the fields oftheme, techniques and composition.
