Since the Opium War and the Black Ships Event marked the prelude to the modernhistory of China and Japan, our two countries have strived for existence anddevelopment facing the invasion of western powers. However, invaders also brought thegreat achievements of western civilization to Asia, including piano. In the past century,while going through different fates in China and Japan, piano music has obtaineddifferent development and accomplishment. This thesis is intended to make acomparative study of the development of piano-the treasure of western art-in these twocountries. An comparative investigation of piano’s development, its production andmanufacturing, and piano educaiton and music creation will be made to seek thedifferences about its reception in these two countries. While inheritting and carryingforward China’s brilliant achievement in this field, we should at the same time learnfrom the advancement of Japan’s piano culture so as to promote piano’s development inour countryThe research methodology of this thesis involves:(1) Method of literature review. In terms of the object of my study, a large amountof academic works, theses, sound materials, music scores and other literature throughlibraries, the internets, etc. is collected for a indepth examination and study.(2) Method of logical analysis. A comparison and analysis about piano’s historyand development in China and Japan was done basing on detailed historical andintroduced literature.(3) Method of overall research. The study concerned all aspects of the researchobjects.Piano has walked on deferent paths in China and Japan. However, it is a pity thatthe communication on piano between our two countries seems so scare that evenmaterials introduing piano art in Japan are pretty hard to get and valuable. This thesis,while reatively breaking the present deadlock, will help to make up the gap between thepiano art in Chian and Japan.
