Dai Jin and Lan Ying, the founders of Zhejiang Painting School and WulinPainting School respectively, were masters of painting in Ming Dynasty. Thispaper is intended to make a series of researchful comparisons, throughcomparative study, on the two masters’ painting styles, artistic expressions aswell as their significance and influence in Chinese painting history from theperspective of appreciating ancient Chinese paintings as well as apprenticelearning in the developmental history of Chinese painting, in order to revealthe general laws of artistic creation and painting styles so as to present therelation of inheritance between the two.Their differences in artistic appreciation and apprentice learning make themdistinctive in painting method as well as drawing technique so that theyeither have their own artistic style. It also points out the important internaland external factors in traditional inheritance of artistic styles.As far astraditional painters are concerned, appreciating ancient paintings as well asapprentice learning are the right ways to artistic success. It’s the key that whyDaiJin and LanYing can be workmans turn into masters.
