The relationships among literature function, literary ecology and stylistic pattern are complex, particularly the former two.To a large extent, we can conclude that ecology determines function, and function determines style. Especially in the specific historical periods, the content of literary ecology was based on the writers’ living circumstances and the styles’ realistic environment not only determines literature style and literary trend, but also influences literary style and literary function of the era. Due to the turmoil of China in the20th century including revolution and war, which lead to the modern Chinese poetry became the style combined with high times and seriousness. The change of Mu Mutian from "the literati aesthetic poetry" to "the general public poetry" is the most obvious. From individual literature to the greater literature, from elegant literature to popular literature, from elite art to popular art, a focus from on the aesthetic function to on publicity function, the "sociality" in the literature increases while the "aesthetic" is weaken. The "Mu Mutian phenomenon" is determined by society (the times and the environment), people (the writer and the reader) and style (the new literature and the new poetry), so the disappearance of a poet of "pure poetry" has its rationality. To reconcile several contradictions in the literary activities of the classical Chinese poetics and Western poetics, self-search and others’ influence, the main body of literature and literary tools, Mu Mutian did positive explorations, including failures. Today to reflect on the "Mu Mutian phenomenon" has great practical significance on Chinese new poetry where "personal writing" is popular.
