A Study Of Addition And Deletion In Japanese-Chinese Translation From The Perspective Of Different Ways Of Thinking

Translation is defined in Dictionary as "a language of conversion into another language". Due to the differences of society, history, environment and religion, each language in the world has its own characteristics. One language cannot fully equal to another. Therefore, to a great extent, translation means the transition among different cultures. One of the purposes of translation is to reproduce the closest natural equivalent of the source language in the receptor language, which requires some ways and techniques of translation. However, as one translating strategy, addition and deletion is most frequently used. Linshu was a translator who didn’t understand foreign languages. In his translating works, the phenomenon of "deletion" and "addition" could be seen everywhere. In addition, Yanfu, who proposed criteria of "faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance", also employed the strategy of addition and deletion in his works. Addition and deletion has been a dispensable translating way in modern translation, especially in translation from Japanese to Chinese.Two languages can not be completely equal. Various ways and techniques can be employed to make two languages close to equivalence, which has direct relation with language difference. The reasons of language differences may lie in the differences of culture, history and so on. The way of thinking is the most salient. Thinking has the decisive effect on language. Different ways and perspectives of thinking bring forth various language styles. Even though China and Japan are neighbors that separated only by a strip of water, the exchange between them has been very frequent since a long time ago. Japan also absorbed a great deal from Chinese culture, so Chinese and Japanese have some ways of thinking in common, for example, people in both countries attach importance to intuition thinking, to the harmony between human beings and the nature and so on. However, different natural environments still yield some different ways of thinking. We can come to the conclusion that the different ways of thinking lead to the employment of addition and deletion in translation, directly or indirectly.This thesis consists of three chapters. On the basis of former research, this study is expected to illustrate the strategy of addition and deletion in translations led by different ways of thinking.Chapter one discusses about the relationship between thinking styles and translation.Chapter two introduces the content of the strategy of addition and deletion and reasons as well.Chapter three analyze in detail different kinds of addition and deletion caused by different ways of thinking.The differences of ways of thinking include four items"①Japanese "imperfect" beauty and Chinese "perfect" beauty②Japanese hold unassuming personality and Chinese put emphasis on personality.③Japanese pay attention to space structure while Chinese time structure.④Japanese has strict grade psychology while Chinese weaken it.The above four differences have brought forth the addition and deletion in personal pronoun, conjunction, conditional sentence, honorific respectively.Through the investigation of this study, the strategy of addition and deletion caused by different ways of thinking is briefly introduced. Something that needs to be explained is that the mentioned strategy of addition and deletion in this study does not cover all the situations in Japanese-Chinese translation. Besides the different ways of thinking, there are also some specific cultural differences leading to adding and deleting.
