The Formation Of Conjunction:"Bushuo"

This paper researches on the conjunctionalization of "Bushuo". First of all, it describes the development of the progressive sentence of "Bushuo" and the concessive sentence of "Bushuo". Then, it makes a pragmatic analysis of the complex sentences of "Bushuo". In addition, it tries to explain the mechanism of conjunctionalization of "Bushuo".This thesis is conducted in six chapters.The first chapter introduces the current research situation relevant to this study, the objective and the significance of this study. It puts forward the problems that need to be solved, and provides research methods and corpus source.The second chapter explores the origin and development of "Bushuo". Firstly, it illustrates the types of progressive sentences of "Bushuo" with some examples. Then it describes the development of each type and the characteristics in each development stage. Finally, it proves that,"Bushuo" has different meanings in three stages. Originally it indicates "giving up a topic and to begin another one", and then it means "expressing progressive relation", and now it implies "reversal-progressive relation".Chapter three describes origin and development of the concessive "Bushou" in a detailed way. Firstly, types of concessive "bushou" are listed, and the development of each type is revealed. Specifically, it has gone through three stages:exclusive relations-conditional relations-concessive relations.Chapter four analyzes complex sentence of "Bushuo" from a pragmatic perspective. Firstly, it looks into pragmatic functions of the progressive "Bushuo" and concessive "Bushuo". And then it analyzes the discourse information of progressive sentence、reversal and progression sentence、unconditional compound sentences、and concessive sentence. Chapter five studies the conjunctionalizing mechanism of "Bushuo" from four perspectives:syntax, semantics, pragmatics and cognition.Chapter six summarizes the main contents and concludes this study.
