ErYaZhengYi, written by Shao Jinhan, Qing Dynasty, is another remarkable masterpiece concerning about the annotation of Erya (The Literary Expositor), which is annotated by Guo Pu and Xing bin previously. Shao Jinhan quotes numerous versions and annotations to proofread his expounding, among which, Guo Pu’s annotation is quoted most. ErYaZhengYi illuminates the transformation between words, identifies things and investigates the theoretical problems about researches on Erya, which forms the basic framework of the annotation related to Erya in Qing Dynasty and creates a new prospect for researches towards it at that time, representing one of the remarkable works of researches towards Erya in Qing Dynasty. Regarding scholastic materials in Erya as its subjects and through the comprehensive study of the chosen texts, this study scrutinizes the scholastic terminology and contents as well as the relations between the explaining words and interpreted words thoroughly. Meanwhile, not only does this study confirm the achievements Shao Jinhan has attained in Chinese Etymology, phonology and scholium; it also differentiates and analyzes the misinterpretations in Shao’s annotation.This thesis altogether includes five chapters. There are two parts presented in Introduction. The first part is resisting about researchers of Erya before Shao Jinhan and their major achievements; the next is related to the presentation of Shao Jinhan’s life and his works. The current research status of ErYaZhengYi and the research objects and implications of this study are also discussed here.Objectives investigated in Chapter Two are as follows:1) a fundamental survey of exegetics, defining exegetics before a thorough study on the scholastic materials.2) the quantity and distribution of scholastic material in Erya.3) generalization of terminologies in exegetics.4) discussion of targeted contents in Erya.Based on the previous research on traditional phonology, Chapter Three analyzes the phonetic relationships between the scholastic materials in Erya and then summarizes their phonetic structures.Chapter Four mainly probes into the semantic relations of the scholastic materials in Erya, with analysis and semantic structures presented.The scholiastic achievements and contribution of Erya is discussed in Chapter Five, which also clarifies and discusses about the misconstruction in its practical perspective.
