There are numerous bright achievements in Chinese art. Many sorts of arts such as Poem, calligraphy, painting, music and dance, were prospering in the process of society developing. Meanwhile, they promoted and interacted one another which let the Chinese art showed overlapping and complexity. In the high Tang period, all kinds of arts come to prosperity in their own field, in which the relationship between poem and calligraphy was closest. During their development, poem and calligraphy were linked to each other, and there was a tradition between them. Just in high Tang period, relationship between the two was more obvious and outstanding, most representative and had far-reaching influence.Firstly this paper describes the relationship between poem and calligraphy before the high Tang period. Focusing on the great age of the high Tang period, the paper analyzes the phenomenon that poem and calligraphy reaching a common prosperity under the atmosphere of the high Tang period. This paper will give some reasons to the common prosperity. Based on the common prosperity, this paper will think about the relationship between poem and calligraphy in the high Tang period.This paper thinks there was a special relationship between poem and calligraphy that both of them combined with each other and promoted each other. This phenomenon showed that:Firstly, there was a similar even common factor in essence between the two forms of art. This factor was the common ideal pursuit and emotion style with which the poets and the calligraphers created the art works. Both of them tried to describe the society and life, realized the value of life, performed personality and freedom of art. In addition, poets and calligraphers have generated two emotion styles: romantic and uninhibited, messiness and solemn. Secondly, the artists in the high Tang period were good at several fields of art. Taking the poets and the calligraphers for example, some pests were good at calligraphy; some calligraphers also could write poems. The poets kept touch with the calligraphers, and wrote poems for the calligraphers’ calligraphy. In addition, the poems about calligraphy got a development. The poets in the high Tang period were interested in calligraphy, appreciated calligraphy, and took part in writing them with their literary talent and temperament. They made the artistic realm of poem and calligraphy together, promoted the art value and art expression of calligraphy, and realized the common development of poem and calligraphy. The phenomenon that there was poem in calligraphy and vice versa, forming a special beautiful scenery line in the high Tang period. The relationship between poem and calligraphy in the high Tang period brought an effect to the middle and late Tang periods, in which it was more popular that the poets were good at calligraphy, meanwhile, more and more poems about calligraphy were written.
