Research On The "Character-based Approach"of Chinese Teaching In France

In the context of the Chinese teaching where "word-based approach" dominates, the "character-based approach" is exceptional. The "character-based approach" is an approach of Chinese teaching based on the characters, different from the word-based approach and sentence-based approach. Today the experts home and abroad have noticed the concept and phenomenon and paid attention to the character-based approach in France and its features, however, the attention is mainly on the introduction and comments which are mostly about some particular textbooks, not covering the whole scope. The causes of the character-based approach in France, its development, the representations and features, the values and revelations to France’s Chinese teaching are not paid enough attention.This paper attempts to summarize the representations and features of the character-based approach of Chinese teaching in France through the syllabus, the compilation of teaching materials and the philosophy of Chinese teaching. In this paper, the background and the development of these features are discussed, the causes analyzed, the revelations revealed.The results show that the Chinese teaching in France has a long history and develops rapidly, the traditions of which are passed on by generations. The features of the approach lie in the syllabus, the compilation of the Chinese textbooks and the philosophy and practice of Chinese teaching. The approach has its long tradition and is rooted in France for good reason, such as the attention on writing, which is the tradition of France’s sinology, the impression of characters and the promotion by the opinion leaders. As last, the paper attempts to draw the revelations from this approach in France which are both valuable to the Chinese teaching in France and all over the world.
