In foreign language learning, the importance of reading for improving learners’comprehensive linguistic competence attracts the attention of the teachers as well as theresearchers; therefore, reading teaching is always regarded as the focus of English teaching,which occupies an important role in English classroom teaching. Reading provides Englishlearners important and efficient linguistic input, and it is the most efficient channel to obtain thewritten information, thereby helping the students enhance their comprehensive Englishcompetence and enabling them to use English effectively in practice.However, in the current English reading teaching of high vocational colleges, most ofthe teachers still employ the traditional method which emphasizes explaining words, sentencesand grammars, and analyzing the gist of paragraphs, but ignores the significance of discourseanalysis in reading teaching. Being taught by such traditional teaching method, students canmaster certain vocabulary and grammar points. However, they receive little attention to fostertheir own comprehensive language use competence. In fact, domestic and international scholarshave paid much attention to the importance of discourse analysis in English reading teaching,and conducted many relative studies. The studies of cohesion, coherence, textual context anddiscourse modes in discourse analysis provide fundamental theoretical bases for Englishreading teaching practice. Therefore, this thesis introduces Professor Martin Cortazzi and Dr. LiXianjin’s5Cs Model on the ground of the theory of discourse analysis. By applying the5CsModel in one experiment class’ reading teaching in one high vocational college, the authorintends to explore whether the students can understand and are willing to accept this discoursemode, and whether the students can better obtain the textual information, analyze themacro-structure of the text, grasp the author’s attitudes and foster some critical thinking throughlearning and using the5Cs Model. The ultimate purpose of applying the5Cs Model is tostimulate students’ learning interest in English reading, and thus help to improve theircomprehensive understanding competence and critical thinking. The study is conducted byadopting two questionnaires and a test to collect data. Analyses of the data reveal that the5CsModel is helpful to arouse the students’ interest in English reading, improve the students’competence of obtaining and decoding information, and to some degree help to develop theircritical thinking.
