The Research Of A Phonograph Course In The Chinese National Language By Yuan-ren Chao

This thesis focuses on Yuan-ren Chao’s first elementary TCFL oraltextbook-A Phonograph Course in the Chinese National Language,which was used as the Chinese textbook by Harvard University in thenineteen twenties. According to the arranging regulations of APhonograph Course in the Chinese National Language, this researchdevotes itself to the benefits and maladies of teaching content andteaching methods in this book by integrating and analyzing the sectionson phonetics, grammar and vocabulary. Based on the research, thethesis evaluates the whole book.Chapter one is the introductory one to illustrates thesignificance, current situation, related theory, study approach andsource of corpus of this research, besides, this chapter introduces thewriting background information of A Phonograph Course in the ChineseNational Language, as well as its edition, teaching target, teachingmethods, main content, arranging regulations and writingcharacteristics.Chapter two, emphasizing on the phonetics section in APhonograph Course in the Chinese National Language, demonstratesdetailed description on its Pinyin strategy of which the relative classicalPinyin strategies are compared to highlight its characteristics. As while,the research analyzes the phonetics teaching with the help of theselective aspect on the phonetic which are difficult to pronounce andto distinguish and the aspect on teaching of Chinese intonation. Chapter three displays compilation on the grammar section inA Phonograph Course in the Chinese National Language to analyze itsgrammar content and features on basis of the analysis of lexiconcategory, sentence category and syntax. Comparing Zhao’s oraltextbook and related researching achievements on contemporaryTCFL grammar, this chapter analyzes the continuity and scientism of hisgrammatical view and evaluates his grammatical analysis andteaching.Chapter four explicates the inductive integration and statisticalon the vocabulary section in A Phonograph Course in the ChineseNational Language. In this chapter, this research summarizes the gain orloss about the lexical order and the teaching concerning with thevocabulary capacity, the proportion of each lexicon category in thebook, the frequency of the vocabulary and the lexical content.In chapter five, researching the benefits and maladies of APhonograph Course in the Chinese National Language as a whole, thethesis illustrates the synthetic evaluation.
