Zhang Fengyi is a famous dramatist in Ming Dynasty, whose dramas like Hongfu Ji have been "proformed all over the country", and has made important contribution to the development of Kunqu. His Chuanqi Dramas always are focused on historical subjects, writing about the legend life of those historical heroes, and impressing his cultural thought on the historical tradition and the contemporary life. There are a lot of aspects to be worth discussing further, such as the selection of historical subjects, the embodied value system and so on. According to these points analyzed under the cultural background in the period, this article attempts to restore the ture personal image of the dramatist and his connotative thought, and present the writing achievements and cultural thought in Zhang Fengyi’s Chuanqi dramas in the middle period of the Ming Dynasty.The article consists of three chapters as follow:Chapter One:"On the Narrative Subjects" mainly discusses the historical narrative subjects in Zhang Fengyi’s Chuanqi dramas. By origined from his history consciousness and the cultural tradition, the article analyzes the legendary selection standard of historical subjects. It classifies the narrative sectors and discovers their various subjects source so as to conclude two writing principles about the proportion between fiction and actuality. On handling with the subjects, it use the traditional conception and new mordern historical narration theory to interpretate the characteristics of history narration.Chapter Two:"On the Drama Ontology" concretely analyzes the historical narrative operation in his Chuanqi dramas. According to the operas conception of Zhang Fengyi, the complicated narrative operating system can be discussed separately from three aspects:On Style and Structure analyzes the pattern and narrative rhythmto discuss his structure consciousness; On Roles and Scene explores the ingenious setting with various kinds of roles including retraced analysis; On Stage Language and Action focuses on the analysis of narrative language and entertainment effect. Lastly, it sums up Zhang Fengyi’s dramas ideas such as the audience consciousness.Chapter Three:"On the Value System" mainly shows the multiple ideological value system in his dramas. Combined with the ZhangFengYi’s thinking, literature conception and era cultural trend, it can be represented to three aspects, such as the traditional historical moral value system, the times cultural value system and self entertainment value system. It concentrates on the chivalrous spirit, entertainment need, and the self compensation psychology. Hope for further analysis its value system of multiple integration and for an overall interpretation about the deep cultural thinking and value orientation of Zhang Fengyi. Lastly, it deals with the stage performance conditions and historical data of Zhang Fengyi’s dramas in order to sum up his operas achievement.
