Redundancy exists widely in language and should be taken into consideration in inter-lingual translation. This thesis researches solutions to redundancy in Chinese-English consecutive interpretation. This thesis starts with an analysis of redundancy. Firstly, it analyzes reasons leading to redundancy, including culture, language structure and idiomatic expressions; secondly, the necessity of dealing with redundancy is stated. The Chinese-English translation involves two languages and redundancy in both languages poses great difficulty for interpreters. Moreover, because of its pragmatic function, redundancy should not be treated simply by omission. Otherwise, the style of the speaker and implied meaning of the speech will possibly be lost. We should translate redundancy with different approaches according to the context. In this thesis, the interpretative theory is employed as the theoretical foundation. Different from other theories, the interpretative theory regards translation as a communicative behavior which contributes a lot to interpretation development. On the basis of this theory and the above mentioned classification of redundancy, solutions are put forward: explanation and addition can be employed to deal with redundancy resulting from cultural differences; sentence-combining and omission are employed to deal with redundancy accused by language structures, and paraphrasing and tracing back source language are employed to deal with redundancy arising from idioms; lastly, a case study is invited to make the conclusion more convincing.
