As the first American female writer who won the Nobel Prize in literature, Pearl S. Buck had lived in China for nearly40years. Due to the unique life experience, she had deep feelings to Chinese people, especially to Chinese famers. And their "Earth Complex" left a deep impression on her.Based on the Earth Complex, this paper attempts to analyze the famers image in The Good Earth Trilogy. Then we may understand Chinese famers’survival state hundred years ago, and experience their deep love to the land. The paper first gives a brief introduction to the life experience of Pearl S. Buck and her literary creation. Through the contrast of two families, the second chapter shows the key role of land in a family’s rise and fall. The third chapter, which focuses on character analysis, describes the separation-reunion relations between famers and their land. In the forth chapter, we introduce the imagologie theory and variation theory in order to discuss the characteristics of Chinese farmers in Pearl S. Buck’s novel from the Other perspective. And then compare it with the image of Chinese farmers created by Chinese writers, who lived in the same period with Pearl S. Buck. After that, the fifth chapter mainly analyzes Pearl S. Buck’s cultural identity, and through her efforts to rebuild her cultural identity, we can see her outstanding contributions to the intercultural communication. Finally, the paper will make a comprehensive assessment towards Pearl S. Buck and The Good Earth Trilogy, which make an indelible value in history.
